"21" is the fact-based story about six MIT students who were trainedtobecome experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinosformillions in winnings. Ben Campbell is a young, highly intelligent, student at M.I.T. in Bostonwho strives to succeed. Wanting a scholarship to transfer toHarvardSchool of Medicine with the desire to become a doctor, Benlearns thathe cannot afford the $300,000 for the four to five years ofschool sincehe comes from a poor, working-class background. But oneevening, Ben isintroduced by his unorthodox math professor Micky Rosainto a small butsecretive club of five. Students Jill, Choi, Kianna,and Fisher, who arebeing trained by Professor Rosa of the skill ofcard counting atblackjack. Intriged by the desire to make money, Ben joins his newfriends on secret weekend trips to Las Vegas where, usingtheir skillsof code talk and hand signals, they have Ben make hundredsof thousandsof dollars in winning blackjack at casino after casino. Ben only wantsto make enough money for the tuition to Harvard and thenback out. Butas fellow card counter, Jill Taylor, predicts, Benbecomes corrupted bygreed and his arrogance at winning which lets his feelings get in theway, and it also puts Professor Rosa, as well asthe group, on the radarof a brutal casino security enforcer, named Cole Williams, who holds apersonal grudge of some kind against Rosawhich threatens to undoeverything the students have learned andearned. |
