Hampshire County Council is issuing free warning labels to toy sellers in the county to ensure the public is protected in time for new rules on toys containing magnets.
From 21 July 2008, all toys containing magnets at all stages of the distribution chain, must be marked with a warning about the dangers of swallowing them. By offering labels, Hampshire Trading Standards can help retailers to comply with this requirement in time for the deadline.
Even though magnets have been used in toys for a long time, in recent years they have become increasingly powerful and can become detached more easily. Given their increased strength, loose magnets or magnetic parts used in toys, now pose a higher risk of serious accidents than in the past.
When more than one magnet is swallowed, they can attract each other and could cause internal injuries, infections or blockages, which can be fatal. Inhaling magnets has also led to serious injuries and immediate surgery is needed if they get into the lungs.
There have been several cases of children swallowing at least two magnets or a magnet and a metal object and requiring major surgery, and last summer over 18 million magnetic toys were recalled worldwide.
Leader of Hampshire County Council, Cllr Ken Thornber said: “There’s a short deadline on the introduction of these warnings and Trading Standards officers are working closely with retailers to ensure they observe these important safety rules in time.
“Some retailers may already have arrangements with their suppliers for re-labelling their stocks, but the offer of these free labels from Hampshire Trading Standards is an excellent way to support firms, particularly small businesses.
“The safety of our children is paramount and we hope that retailers will act responsibly to ensure they comply fully with these new rules.”
Retailers who need a supply of labels or anyone with concerns about the new rules can ring Hampshire Trading Standards on 01962 833620.
The labels sent out by Hampshire County Council Trading Standards contain the following wording:
“WARNING: Contains magnets or magnetic components. Can cause serious or fatal injury. Seek immediate medical help if magnets are swallowed or inhaled.”
