Advanced driving instructors wanted for Pass Plus scheme

Advanced driving instructors are being urged to register for Hampshire County Council’s Pass Plus scheme and provide enhanced training for new drivers, aged 17 to 24 years old.

Registering for the scheme will entitle advanced driving instructors to claim a £75 payment from the Council towards the cost of providing the Pass Plus course (payable once the driving student completes all modules). Additionally A-Plan insurance has offered to pay a further £75 to each student that completes the course and goes on to take out a motor insurance policy though A-Plan.

To deliver the Pass Plus scheme, advanced driving instructors must have a Hampshire based home or business address. Instructors can register by contacting the Road Safety Team on 01962 874600.

The Pass Plus scheme has been specially designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and aims to raise driving standards. Each student must complete each of the six modules covering:

  • driving in town
  • driving in all weathers
  • driving on rural roads
  • driving at night
  • driving on dual carriageways
  • driving on motorways.

Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment at Hampshire County Council, commented: “We are keen to recruit as many advanced driving instructors as possible. Pass Plus is a great scheme for improving the driving skills of newly qualified drivers and expanding their experience and we would like as many young people who’ve just passed their test to benefit from this additional training.

“New drivers are more likely to have a crash in the first two years after passing their test, with one in five crashing during the first year. Completing all of the modules should help new drivers to keep themselves and other road users safe from harm.”

David Gordon from A-Plan said, “The Pass Plus scheme is the best way for new drivers to gain valuable road experience when they are at their most vulnerable – we hope that by reducing the financial burden of taking the course more people will take it and, as a result, be safer drivers. Cheaper motor insurance premiums are an added bonus!”
